Train me.

Changing lives through service is all about relationships…building them and nurturing them. Changing lives with water is no different.

Water-related work is most often done in developing countries under conditions that require you to be ‘on your best game’. Time is often limited. Parts and supplies you bring, or have obtained in country, are only what’s needed to do the job. So before leaving the country to do water work make sure you’re trained to do it effectively. First, consider which area(s) you want to learn:

Community Health Education & Water Assessment: This includes interactive health education and sanitation. Training in this area will help you assess the impact bad drinking water has on the village or community’s residents and determine how best to help them.

Water Wells: In many areas of the world, access to drinking water can be solved in part, by simply getting it out of the ground. Through EDGE OUTREACH, you can learn different well-drilling methods that are appropriate for developing countries and remote locations. However, water may need to be treated once it’s found.

Water Purification: By learning the water purification process, you’ll learn how to destroy the bacteria and viruses that are the main causes of waterborne diseases and death.

Installing mini water treatment plants: In most water projects you have to do more than provide a water source to ensure potable water. It sounds difficult but an ordinary person can learn how to do this in a weekend. The water treatment plant allows you to store large amounts of water for continuous use.

Water Filtration: In some areas of the world water is contaminated by paticulates, heavy metals such as lead and mercury, and dangerous chemicals. Learn how to remove these contaminates through water filtration.

Water Pumps: Water often needs to be pumped from a water source like a well or lake and stored in some sort of tank. If electricity is available you can use an electric pump. If not, you’ll need to know how to operate and repair hand pumps. Throughout Africa alone there are over 1 million inoperable hand pumps. With training a person with some basic tools and parts can repair a pump in as little as a few minutes or a few hours. Learn not only which pumps to use, but how to use them and repair them.

Training local, indigenous people: Working in and with the culture in a way that builds trust is critical to the success of water projects. Cultural sensitvity helps ensure the water system you’re leaving behind is sustainable and lasting. In addition, when distributing water in the community, it is important to plan and implement well.

Training courses are available year-round. Contact EDGE OUTREACH for training dates & locations.
EDGE can also bring the training to your group.
