In January 2007, I attended Passion, a collegiate conference in Atlanta, Georgia. There I learned of the organization CURE International. CURE was raising money to provide surgeries for disabled children in the Dominican Republic. I had to go! So I began making plans to spend the summer in the Dominican as a volunteer at CURE Hospital. Before leaving for the DR, I attended training on water purification through EDGE OUTREACH. Later in the summer I planned on traveling to Costa Rica with EDGE for a water purification project. My simple understanding of how a mini water treatment system worked came in handy when I got to the DR. While working at the CURE hospital, I discovered that the six-story hospital had water challenges. They had to purchase large amounts of water just to be able to safely provide surgeries. I began talking to the members of the hospital about EDGE OUTREACH and about the water system. After returning to Louisville, KY, I went to Costa Rica with EDGE and continued to keep in touch with the hospital. EDGE sent an experienced intern to the hospital to look at the situation more in depth. She returned, convinced that the EDGE system would work. From there, everything was set in motion. More EDGE representatives visited the hospital and developed a plan for installation. Now we just needed funding and people to go.

In September, SWIMSERVE.com was launched as a platform for mobilizing college students, getting them involved with water purification projects around the world. Students can donate money to water projects, and the CURE hospital is the first project on the list. In January of 2008, a small team of college students from Murray State University in KY will travel to the Dominican Republic to install a water system for CURE Hospital and represent the first SWIMSERVE project team. I am convinced that this is the first of many projects inspired by the crucial need for pure water and supported by the network of EDGE OUTREACH and SWIMSERVE.com.

    Hi Deborah Jean,

You certainly can get involved. You could do so much! You can become a member. You could start a drive at school to raise awareness and funds for projects. What grade are you in? We allow students who have completed the 9th grade to go on trips as well. We would love to get you involved. Let me know what you are wanting to get going with.
